A toastmaster gives some advice

A Greystones Toastmaster at a non-toastmaster conference gave a few words of advice to a nervous presenter. The presenter put this testimonial on Facebook. ================================================================== I feel it necessary to say a public thank you to somebody that I met this weekend. I’ve never quite understood what toastmasters do, but now I ‘get it’. I had to give a talk and I really am terrified of public speaking (believe it or not). I can have a full but completely invisible panic attack before I have to do it. Colin Byyford gave me all of 2 minutes of his time and some really good advice. I will appreciate it for years to come. Thank you. ================================================================== Needless to say we are pointing her to her nearest...

What a weekend

Good evening! As the dust settles on the very last of District 71’s Humorous Speech and Table Topics Final and we have all finally recovered from an action packed weekend, I would like to share some of the amazing highlights for Area 5. Some, or all, of this news will not be new but I still think it’s well worth mentioning the amazing performance of Area 5 in Sheffield last weekend. After a great day at workshops on Friday and a night full of Toastmaster fun and entertainment on Friday night, our attention turned to the Humorous Speech Final on Saturday.  Congratulations to Dermot Carey who came second representing Division M in this most important speech final but that was not all that happened that day. Greystones picked up two amazing awards – Sarah Jane winning Area Director of the Year – a fantastic achievement and very well deserved, with all four clubs achieving President’s Distinguished awards in 2016 – 2017.  No mean feat while Sarah Jane also progressed her own speaking and leadership awards at the same time. Mairead Dillon was also honoured with a Distinguished Service award for her contribution to the Youth Leadership Programme.  For the past 6 years, Mairead has been the driver of the programme through her work with Transition Year students both locally and in other city centre locations.  She has travelled throughout...

April 14th Toastmasters Meeting

We had a terrific Toastmasters meeting last Thursday. Vincent did an excellent job as our toastmaster and everyone present got to play some part in the evenings success. Special mention must go to the Table Topics session that was prepared by one of our newer members – Mary Duffy. It was excellently put together and an approach I hadn’t seen before. Looking forward already to our second April meeting on Thursday 28th. I gave a very quick follow up to our Feedback night at the end of the meeting. It is super to see so much activity in the club. Short education topics are now scheduled in prior to the start of meetings where members can learn about various aspects of Toastmasters. If you want to know about particular areas just ask – we can schedule a talk going forward. We also have the mentorship programme in place and Jackie has informed us she is undertaking the mentoring role of long standing members next year on an area basis. Please note because of the demand for speeches it is likely that we will schedule one extra meeting before we wrap up for the summer break. Now is that time when as a club we put together our committee for next year, If you have an interest in being part of the leadership committee for 2016/2017 please give me a...
